Design Process

Stage 1: The Dream Phase

This is the first step in which we design the project, usually multiple versions, so we can see what's possible in your space. These preliminary designs are to help us find a direction for your project. Budgetary constraints are ignored for this phase so we are free to explore all of the design options available to us.

Stage 2: Project Direction

Preliminary designs are reviewed and you’ll get to identify which design you prefer. You may love one design just as it’s presented, or you may explore combining parts of multiple designs, or we may simply need to start over, but the ultimate goal of this phase is to find that perfect design for you.

Stage 3: Material Selection

Now that we’ve identified your project layout, we move into initial product and material selections. Again here we suggest ignoring costs and budget. These selections are preliminary to fully spec-out the dream project. These costs are often higher than most clients expect or want them to be, but don’t worry as we will revisit and revise them as we move through the process.

Stage 4: Labor Estimation

This stage often overlaps with stage 3, but the goal is to provide a full understanding of all aspects of your design and how they affect or impact the costs of your project. A visit to your home will be required by one or more contractors, and sometimes a follow-up visit is needed to double-check some things. Optional components to the project, direct & indirect, are sometimes identified at this stage.

Stage 5: Project/Material Refinement

Now we start to focus on the budget. This is probably the most important phase as this is where we figure out a way to make it all work. This is done through a clear understanding of what the project actually involves as well as careful consideration of the many materials and options that make up the project total.

To get your project budget to a spot you are comfortable with, we may need to change some of the original material/product selection to reduce the overall costs, but always with the goal of maintaining the design integrity. This step can be repeated a few times and it’s often a game of give-and-take with the budget. After this phase, we will have an extremely accurate total for your project’s investment outlay.

Stage 6: Starting the Project

It may take a while to get to this stage, but when you do you’ll finally be ready to get things ordered and get this project moving forward. Take a breath and congratulate yourself, you’re on your way to realizing your dream.

Most contractors will require a deposit, somewhere between 10%-25% depending on when your project will start, to lock you in on their schedules. Cabinetry is all special order so it will need to be paid for in full at the time we order it.

Counter-tops will usually be a 50% deposit. If you use our preferred appliance dealer, you’ll pay for them upon delivery. All the various other materials are usually paid for in full as you order them, but there are so many suppliers, this may vary.

And soon, before you know it, your project will be finished and TRS Designs, Inc is happy to have been by your side through the whole process!
